As we continue to introduce you to our musicians for the September Wind Quartet concerts, we are pleased to shine today’s spotlight on our clarinetist, Gretchen Roper!

Gretchen Roper was a core musician with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra for 18 years, retiring in 2024, and appeared in symphonic concerts, chamber ensembles, and educational programs throughout the Lowcountry. Praised for her lyrical tone and expressive phrasing, she has brought warmth and clarity to a wide range of repertoire, from classical masterworks to contemporary works. She also performs regularly with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, where she plays both bass clarinet and E-flat clarinet. She has also enjoyed being a guest musician with the Charlotte Symphony, Sarasota Orchestra, Atlanta Ballet, Wintergreen Summer Music Festival, and Minnesota Orchestra.

Beyond her orchestral career, Gretchen has been a dedicated teacher, guiding students of all ages and sharing her love for music. She also owns and operates a clarinet repair business, combining craftsmanship with her deep knowledge of the instrument to support players in the Charleston community and beyond.

Today, Gretchen balances her musical life with a career as a REALTOR® with Carolina One Real Estate, while remaining closely connected to the arts community she has long called home.
