🎶✨ Celebrating the start of Hispanic Heritage Month by shining a spotlight on the incredible Teresa Carreño! 🎻✨
A Venezuelan-born pianist, composer, and conductor, Carreño was a true musical prodigy. She made her mark on the global stage in the 19th century, performing for royalty and leading major orchestras at a time when few women did. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of musicians around the world!
Last year one of our Classical Kids Concerts brought to life the incredible story of this important musicians through a musical adaptation of “Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreño Played the Piano for President Lincoln.”

This season, we perform her String Quartet during our “From Haydn To Tango: A Fiesta of Music For String Quartet” on September 22 and 25th.

We are so grateful for her contributions to the classical music world!

🎶🎻We are so excited that the season is beginning!

Today we continued with our CMC TWO coachings, with some amazing high school students working on string quartets of Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Haydn along with a piano trio by Gurlitt and wind quintet by Beethoven. That was followed by a brief CMC TWO/CMC side-by-side rehearsal, a mini-performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, and then a fun and informative Volunteer Training event.

We are all ready to begin our concerts! First up – a set of house concerts beginning next Sunday at 62 Broad Street.

🎻 One month from today, we open our Ovation Concert Series with the return of our good friend, violinist Francisco Fullana. He will guide us through an afternoon of music by Boccherini, Piazzolla, and Gade.

✨ The program includes Boccherini’s virtuosic “Fandango” Guitar Quintet No. 4 with the Grammy-award-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux bringing his mastery to the guitar part.
🎶 Francisco and Jason will be joined by Chamber Music Charleston’s Jenny Weiss (violin), Ben Weiss (viola), and Timothy O’Malley (cello) for what promises to be an exhilarating performance.

🎟 Tickets are going fast. We can’t wait to share this wonderful afternoon of music with our Charleston audiences.

Mark your calendars and come out to Hutchinson Square Park on Friday, September 27 to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an evening of music, food, and culture featuring musicians of Chamber Music Charleston and DJ Luigi of Latin Groove. Food trucks will be on hand to sell authentic Latin foods and demonstrations of Tango and Salsa dancing will take place. Various information tables will be set up in our “Cultural Esplanade” where visitors can learn more about the cultural organizations, services, and businesses in the area.

On Sunday, September 22 Chamber Music Charleston kicks off their Hispanic Heritage Month activities with their debut performance at the Colleton Civic Center! 🎶🪅🎻

Join us for a casual exploration of the string quartet – starting with the music of the “Father of the String Quartet” Franz Joseph Haydn and then traveling across the ocean to discover the music of South America. The program demystifies classical music with entertaining anecdotes and insights that one may not expect at a traditional classical concert.

Violinists Frances Hsieh and Tomas Jakubek, violist Ben Weiss, and cellist Timothy O’Malley will perform movements from Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 76, No. 1, Dvorak’s “American” String Quartet, Teresa Carreño String Quartet in B minor, and Jose Elizondo’s Danzas Latinoamericanas in addition to arrangements of such popular tangos as El Choclo and Jealousie.

This program is part of CMC’s Hispanic Heritage Month events, which include the free Fiesta on the Square in Summerville (Friday, September 27 from 6-9pm) and the Season Opening Ovation Concert “Tango Meets Classical: Music of Boccherini and Piazzolla” in Downtown Charleston (Sunday, September 29 at 3pm).

We open with a series of House Concerts showcasing the wonder and beauty of the violin and viola. From Charles-Auguste de Bériot’s jaw-dropping virtuosic Duo for Two Violins to Antonin Dvořák’s gloriously expressive Terzetto for Two Violins and Viola, CMC musicians Frances Hsieh (violin), Tomas Jakubek (violin), and Ben Weiss (viola) will usher in the season with an exceptionally crafted program.

🎶🎻Today our CMC TWO Education Fellowship Qua

🎶🎻Today our CMC TWO Education Fellowship Quartet visited students and young audiences at Sanders Clyde Elementary School and the John L. Dart Library in downtown Charleston. Thank you to the all of our Education Investors for supporting such important programming, and especially the South Carolina Arts Commission which has provided foundational support for our entire Youth Chamber Music Initiative.

We were especially excited to work one on one with the 4th grade string students of Mr. Dominik Fields at Sanders Clyde Elementary School. We look forward to returning soon to continue our work with them and are excited to see what progress they will make over the coming weeks!

Our string quartet has prepared a beautiful program of music by Florence Price, William Grant Still, and Antonín Dvořák for our final set of performances. On Sunday we brought our music to the Presbyterian Church on Edisto – one of our favorite spaces to perform in.

We are grateful for the support of the @edistoartguild for this series, and we look forward to returning in October!

We are having a wonderful time at Haut Gap Middle School this month, as our musicians take part in a mini-residency with their talented string students. Yesterday we worked in small sectionals and also rehearsed with them in a side-by-side format as they prepared for their big year-end concert.
