Friday, November 6 at 7pm | Echoes of the Saint Cecilia Society: Concert Lecture

Old Exchange Building, 122 E Bay St, Charleston, SC 29401

The Echoes of the Saint Cecilia Society Concert Lecture series returns to the Old Exchange Building with a program exploring the historical basset clarinet. Developed in the late 1770s, this distinctive instrument was championed by virtuoso clarinetist Anton Stadler and inspired Mozart to compose both his Clarinet Quintet and Clarinet Concerto. Guest clarinetist Graeme Steele Johnson will introduce audiences to the instrument and demonstrate its use in Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet.
The lecture will continue with a discussion of how the basset clarinet eventually gave way to the modern clarinet, with musical demonstrations exploring the instrument’s distinctive range and expressive capabilities, and its lasting influence on the clarinet repertoire.
This event is free with advance reservation, as seating is limited.
